Police urge safe Halloween after Seoul stampede
At least 150 people have died with another 80 injured after a Halloween party in the crowded Itaewon entertainment district of Seoul went wrong. The deaths include foreign citizens of China, Australia, Iran and Norway. Most victims were teens and young adults out celebrating Halloween for the first time since COVID restrictions were lifted in South Korea.
South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol has called a national period of mourning while police investigate what sparked the stampede.
World leaders pay tribute
Leaders from around the world have sent condolance messages to South Korea after one of the most horrific accidents in recent memory for the nation.
This includes a statement from both President Xi and CE John Lee.
"On behalf of the Chinese government and the people of China, I express our deep condolences for the victimsโ, said President Xi said in a message to President Yoon.
Meanwhile, John Lee wrote on his social media that โIt is with sadness that we learnt of the tragedy in Seoul, Korea. I express profound sorrow over the passing of the victims, extend my deepest condolences to their families and wish for a speedy recovery to all those who were injuredโ
Keep LKF safe
The police issued a statement urging Halloween partiers not to overcrowd Lan Kwai Fong or gather too much on the slopes of the nightlife district.
"We will implement one-way pedestrian flow. [โฆ] To avoid danger, we hope people won't stay or gather at these places for too longโ, said the police.
Even though Halloween falls on today - a Monday - Iโm sure some of you are still going out! So be safe!
