John Lee’s big Mainland adventure
CE John Lee will take his first official trip into the Mainland next Wednesday and Thursday.
His itinerary will see him visit Shenzhen and Guangzhou, where he will be attending an opening ceremony for Minxin School, founded by former chief executive CY Leung for the children of Hongkongers. Afterwards, he will be attending the opening of the HKUST campus in Nansha, GZ.
Following all the school openings, he’ll go back down to Shenzhen where he’ll be meeting with Mainland authorities on re-opening the border. He’ll be coming back to HK in the afternoon.
The whole trip will be taken in a closed loop.
COVID in Hong Kong

COVID-19 in Hong Kong
New cases: 8579 (297 imported)
Total cases: 1,487,972
New deaths: 9
Total deaths: 9,643
Compulsory Testing locations: 43
COVID rate could pass 10k soon
He urged the public to “take additional precautionary measures in preventing transmission [such as] decreas[ing] or minimis[ing] participations in large-scale gatherings or meal gatherings so as to decrease the chance of an outbreak or transmission”.
He added that if numbers continue to increase, stricter curbs may have to be reintroduced.
Byephoon Ma-On
Typhoon Ma-On safely departed from Hong Kong after causing incredible damage to a couple of bins.
A T8 signal was raised at 7:25pm Wednesday evening, and had subsided enough to be reduced to T3 by 9:25am Thursday morning. By 4:10pm, all signals had been cancelled.
The observatory reports the storm not coming as close to Hong Kong as expected. Ma-On made landfall into Mainland China before noon.
Although there were large winds in some parts of Hong Kong Thursday morning, commuters largely said they were able to get to work smoothly. All schools were cancelled for the day.
There has been one reported injury, four fallen trees and one flooding case.
Wanchai - Car Crash Capital
Urban planning NGO ‘Street Reset’ found that the section of Wanchai Road between Heard St and Burrows St is the most dangerous place for pedestrians in the city, with 246 collisions per sq/m between 2015-2019.
Outside of Wan Chai, the next most dangerous areas was Sham Shui Po market, then Wan Chai (again) between Chun Yuen St and Johnston Road.
Their study found that most accidents actually take place on side roads and junctions, often near municiple service buildings or markets, as opposed to main roads - “in contrast to general perceptions”, they said.
Want something interactive? They made a map of all the car crashes.
