🌊Hong Kong: The Impossible City
John Lee awarding John Lee the GBM: the highest award that John Lee can give John Lee
Good morning,
Tried my hand at some long-form tweeting today. It’s not very good but it’s ‘honest work’ (it’s googling and writing but I swear I did know at least part of this stuff!)
If you’re interested in local conservation tidbits, read on.

HT Originals | A review of Karen Cheung’s ‘Impossible City’
About two months ago, I was contacted by a college in New York about going to a book signing of ‘Impossible City’ by Karen Cheung, ex-HKFP editor and music reviewer among other cool positions.
Angelo Wong, PhD student at Columbia spoke to Karen about her personal experiences being raised in both local and international schools and how that affected her view of Hong Kong’s political state, and also just about what it means to be a Hong Konger in general.
I won’t spoil too much, but both Angelo’s review/interview and the book are absolutely gorgeous reads.

Quarantine at Ocean Park
The government has released the 8th round of DQH’s and there’s a newcomer: Novotel Century Hong Kong in Wan Chai.
Oh the subtitle is because Ocean Park Marriott is adding extra rooms. They’ve been on for a while.
The new list (available here) will be active from 1 Aug to 31 Oct.
New arrest for 721
The police have arrested another individual related to the 721 Yuen Long incident where both protestors and bystanders at Yuen Long station were attacked by a group of white shirt clad men on 21 July 2019.
Originally described more as an attack, the narrative has shift turned to it being a ‘gang fight’ that blew up.
The arrestee, surnamed Ho, was not one of the white shirted men. He was reportedly wearing black that night and was also arrested twice - once then, and again on 26 Aug at another demonstration.
He will appear before Fanling Court today.
