National Security Law
Mass arrests of 55 pro-democracy figures under the NSL occurred on Wednesday morning, which includes those who ran for the democratic primary and a number of others. Most of those who were let out on bail the following day with no charges. Some of the high profile names arrested include Benny Tai, Chu Hoi-dick, Jeffrey Andrews, and Joshua Wong.
COVID-19
HK has seen the lowest number of daily COVID-19 cases since the start of the fourth wave. Over the last two weeks, HK has reported 15 cases of the mutations from the UK. In-person classes have been suspended until at least the Lunar New Year; speaking of the Lunar New Year, the fair usually held every year has been cancelled due to the pandemic situation.
2019 Protests
Three people were charged and sentenced to up to 5.5 years in jail for their involvement in the airport riot and assault of a mainland journalist. Several other arrests have been made regarding the case of the Yuen Long ‘white shirt’ attacks.
In Case You Missed It
The government plans to make new laws criminalising voyeurism and ‘upskirt’ photos, or the non-consensual photography of a person’s private parts.
Thousands of beauty parlour owners and staff members staged an online protest over the pandemic-related closures, demanding that they be allowed to go back to work.
