🌊 Tiananmen Square vigil: A ‘struggle of memory against forgetting’
In other news, the slogan "Hong Kong add oil" has been banned at another event...
Good morning,
Did you know that the phrase ‘add oil‘ originated from the 1960s Macau Grand Prix when supporters would urge drivers to ‘add oil‘ and ‘step on the gas‘? Pretty interesting…

Tiananmen Square vigil organisers stand trial
Five democrats who organized last year’s banned Tiananmen Square vigil appeared before the District Court on Wednesday. Pro-democracy organisers and lawmakers Lee Cheuk-yan, Simon Leung, Richard Tsoi, Wu Chi-wai and Leung Yiu-chung previously pled guilty to charges over holding the unauthorised assembly.
Lee Cheuk-yan—chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements—gave his own submission, thanking “the people of Hong Kong who kept the promise of 1989” and citing Czech writer Milan Kundera to describe how the Victoria Park candlelight vigil symbolised “the struggle of memory against forgetting.”
“If I must go to jail to affirm my will, then so be it,” said Lee, which was met with a round of applause in the gallery.
The other defendant’s representatives presented mitigating factors to the court, citing the defendant’s respective devoted and honorable public service careers.

Political slogans banned at Cyclothon and New World Harbour Race
Hong Kong’s annual cycling competition and cross-habour race will return after two years of cancellation but participants will be banned from displaying slogans such as “come on Hong Kong”. Organisers warned that they will involve the police if people refuse to cooperate.
According to local media, if cyclists show political slogans on their clothes or bicycles at the Cyclothon event, they will be asked to remove them. Likewise at the New World Harbour Race, if a political phrase is written on the body and cannot wiped away, the swimmer will be barred from entering the water.
Last month, the Standard Chartered marathon sparked controversy after runners wearing the slogan “Hong Kong add oil“ were warned to stay away from “political attire“.
