Former Urban Council leader passes away at 99 years
Hilton Cheong-Leen, the first Chinese man to become the chairman of the Urban Council (served 1981-1986), died on Tuesday at the age of 99 years old.
Behind him he leaves a trail of other achievements and accolates:
He was one of the longest-serving elected office holders in history, working as elected council member from 1957-1991
He worked as a Legislative Council member for one years
He ran an export business in the 40s
He was an advocate for free compulsory education in the 1970s
Fun fact: Cheong-Leen was born in British Guyana in 1922!
Hong Kong’s vaccine bubble is about to get bigger
Hong Kong will be requiring that locations such as schools, libraries, and museums fall under the growing vaccine bubble. Currently, vaccinations are required for those entering entertainment establishments. The government is still ironing out details like exemptions for certain groups of people, but Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced that this new mandate will take effect on 24 February.
According to an employee at a community vaccination centre, there has been an uptake of residents coming in to get vaccinated since this announcement.
The city confirmed 39 new cases, all imported (or linked to imported cases) save for one from the Moon Palace restaurant cluster:
In other COVID news:
In Hong Kong, 53 people have died within 14 days of receiving their vaccination; experts say that 38 of them were not linked to the COVID shots.
Compulsory tests have been mandated for anyone present at 57 premises at specified times. See where and when in Annex 1.
