Political science academic Brian Fong has left his position as an associate professor at Education University after pro-Beijing source Ta Kung Pao accused him of pro-independent views when he launched a joint petition with Civic Party leader at the time, Alvin Yeung, to call for democracy in the city. He has been quoted as saying that ā€œit is not a workable idea to anticipate constructive dialogue with a China that has been liberalisedā€, calling for people to embrace a ā€œHong Kong identityā€ and engage in civil disobedience.

A university spokesperson refused to give any additional comment aside from announcing his departure.

Quarantine for elderly home residents shortened

COVID-19 updates

Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases putting a strain on isolation facilities, the number of quarantine days imposed on residents of elderly care homes has gone down from 14 to 7 days.

Sinovac jabs have been approved for children as young as 3 to receive, starting tomorrow. Previously they were only available for people aged 18 and up. BioNTech vaccinations are available for children aged 5 and up.

Last-minute plans for Valentine’s Day

Here’s a selection of things to do with your loved ones today or this week (but not more than one other person in public places because that’s illegal). Our recommendations include an at-home wine and cheese pairing, a coffee mocktail, and a tiny Soho spot for beer.
