Good morning,

Hey everyone! I feel like I’ve been writing about speculation on the potential mainland border reopening for about the last two months. It’s nice to have a (somewhat) concrete timeline for once…

Hong Kong-Mainland border will fully reopen by June

SCMP’s exclusive sources have revealed that Hong Kong’s land border with mainland China will reopen fully to quarantine-free travel by June at the latest. Insiders say that a three-step plan starting in mid-December would begin with a small pilot programme involving daily quotas, eventually followed by an expansion in February to allow “mass events”.

By June, several of the 10 border checkpoints are projected to fully reopen. However, Chief Executive Carrie Lam told media on Monday that Hong Kong students who lived on the mainland would not be given priority under the proposal to resume quarantine-free cross-border travel. As a result, nearly 27,000 cross-border students are set to miss out.

Taxi industry calls for stricter gov. regulation of Uber

The Hong Kong Taxi and Public Light Bus Association has urged the government to ban all private vehicles with neither a valid hire-car permit nor a taxi license from Uber’s app. Although Uber has been operating in Hong Kong for seven years, ride-hailing services are not legal without a hire-car permit.

“I suggested that the government introduce a law to regulate the Uber app, so that those vehicles without a hire-car permit or a taxi licence can’t sign up for the Uber ride-hailing platform and provide service,”

— Chau Kwok-keung, chairman of the Hong Kong Taxi and Public Light Bus Association

Chau presented the idea to senior transport officials in August, who promised to think about it but did not give any timetable for action. Chau’s comments are the latest attempt by the taxi industry to curb its rival Uber, which they accuse of robbing their business.
