JP Morgan CEO visits Hong Kong
JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon is now the first Wall Street chief to visit Greater China since the start of the pandemic. The government said Dimon was exempted from the city’s strict quarantine regulations due to the short period of his visit (32 hours), and because his visit was “in the interest of Hong Kong’s economic development”. Hong Kong’s quarantine policy “does make it harder“ to attract and retain talent, said Dimon.
During his visit, Dimon commented on China’s ongoing property market woes. “We do not expect China’s property woes to have a big impact [on global markets],“ he told SCMP in an interview. Dimon also expressed that he was “not swayed by geopolitical winds” relating to US-China tensions, and is “optimistic they will work out rational plans.“

Cathay imposes stricter self-isolation rules for aircrew
Cathay Pacific unveiled a series of “enhanced“ self-isolation rules on Monday, under which, for their first three days back in the city, aircrew would only be able to leave their homes for a maximum of two hours a day. Valid reasons for going out are limited to purchasing “food and essential daily necessities”, exercising alone, seeking medical attention and taking a Covid-19 test.
Last week, a Cathay cargo pilot arriving from Frankfurt tested positive for COVID-19 after being exempted from quarantine, triggering a lockdown at his residential estate.
HK Gov. ponders re-legalizing hunting of wild boars
The Hong Kong government may relaunch a scheme to allow licensed members of the public to hunt wild pigs as a method of controlling wild boar populations. The Agricultural, Fisheries and Conservation Department is also set to implement a new policy aimed at ‘humanely euthanising’ wild boars that enter urban areas.
“Some boars have become accustomed to appearing in urban areas… they will cause a nuisance and danger to citizens,” said AFCD Assistant Director Simon Chan. Animal rights groups and wildlife experts argued that killing the boars is “not a viable long-term measure,”, and instead urged the government to manage public and municipal waste in and adjacent to the habitats of the wild boar. A petition urging the AFCD to withdraw the policy has already collected 44,000 signatures.
