Retired Cardinal Joseph Zen held a mass after his court appearance concerning a fund supporting pro-democracy protesters in 2019. Hundreds of people watched him hold mass at the Holy Cross Church on Hong Kong Island.

Zen was detained earlier this month under the national security law ('“conspiracy to collude with foreign forces”) for acting as one of the trustees of this financial aid fund that helped with medical and legal costs for these protesters. He and the other trustees have not yet been officially charged for this security law breach.

During the court appearance, he and four other of the no-longer-active fund’s trustees pleaded not guilty to failing to register the fund as a “society” with the police force.

In other national security/protest-related news:

  • Police have new armoured vehicles, nicknamed “saber-toothed tigers”, meant for anti-riot/terrorism work. The new vehicles are expected to be released for police use next month, in time for Handover Day.

  • There’s apparently no room at Victoria Park for 4 June candlelit vigil because it’s booked out that day for other activities.

  • The government plans to consult the public later this year about regulating crowdfunding online to prevent funds that may endanger national security.

  • A woman who was planning on joining HK’s disciplinary forces has been convicted of unlawful assembly at a November 2019 protest. The woman claims that she did not intend to be at the protest but was clearing bricks on the road while in transit to the bus stop.
