Wall Street Journal threatened by Hong Kong gov. over âincitementâ
Erick Tsang, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, has threatened the Wall Street Journal over the alleged âincitementâ it made in an editorial published earlier this month. The editorial in questionâtitled âHong Kong Says Voteâor Elseââcontained âbaseless assumptions,â Tsang wrote.
Tsang argued that, contrary to what was written in the article, last yearâs legislative race was postponed due to Covid-19, not because democrats swept the polls during the 2019 district elections. Tsang also hit back over the articleâs claims that Hongkongers ârisk harsh penalties if they protest in public,â instead citing that Hongkongersâ rights are guaranteed in the security law and Basic Law.
âPlease be advised that inciting another person not to vote, or to cast invalid vote, by activity in public during election period is an offenceâŠirrespective whether the incitement is made in Hong Kongor abroad. We reserve the right to take necessary action.â
â Erick Tsang, Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs
