🌊 HKU removes iconic Tiananmen Massacre monument
In other news, Xi Jinping praises CE Carrie Lam’s work at annual duty visit
Good morning,
I still remember walking past the Pillar of Shame every time I passed through the Haking Wong Podium to visit my father’s office at HKU. To be honest, as a kid, I never really took note of the monument. Only as I grew older did I learn what it truly stood for, but never once did I imagine that it would be gone so soon.
How things have changed.

HKU removes iconic Tiananmen Massacre monument
The University of Hong Kong removed the Pillar of Shame monument late Wednesday night. Views of the area were obscured with curtains and plastic barriers at around 11pm. Construction noise could be heard as the area was cordoned off without notice and surrounded by security guards.
The monument—sculpted by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt—was created as a memorial to the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. Originally erected during the annual candlelight vigil at Victoria Park in 1997, the sculpture was exhibited at CUHK, Lingnan College, HKBU, HKUST, PolyU and CityU before the HKU Student Union voted to house the Pillar of Shame at HKU on a long-term basis. Since then, the monument has been exhibited at Haking Wong Podium for the past 24 years.

Xi praises CE Carrie Lam’s work at annual duty visit
President Xi Jin Ping has praised Hong Kong’s leader for her work over the past year. The CE is currently in Beijing for her annual duty visit. Xi expressed approval for Hong Kong’s recent revamp of its electoral system, which he said had enabled Hongkongers to exercise their democratic rights and be “masters of their own home”.
After the meeting, however, Lam conceded that there was still no further developments about reopening the border with mainland China.
