Good morning.
I’ve been told by at least one High Tide reader that they most look forward to our personalised notes at the beginning of each newsletter. So, I’ve decided that while my Tides may come in later than they should, just know that it’s because I’m putting a little extra love and care into my morning notes for our loyal readers.
Some of you may know that I’m a writer. In fact, I’d argue that four years in academia and three in journalism have made me a worse one. But, I can say with utmost confidence that I write one hell of a letter – especially love letters. A personal favourite is a heartfelt review that I wrote to a restaurant in Montréal that will always be near and dear to my heart:

Anyway, enjoy today’s High Tide.

Häagen-Dazs recalls ice cream products
HK’s Centre for Food Safety recalled a batch of vanilla-flavoured Häagen-Dazs ice cream that was imported from France. The reason for the recall? Well, they found an “unauthorised pesticide” called ethylene oxide in the ice cream tubs.
If you’ve got any vanilla HD in the freezer with the best-before dates between 3 July, 2022 and 17 July, 2023, definitely send it back or to the bin.
Or eat it and see what happens, just to feel something. Let me know how it goes.*
*This is sarcasm. Do not eat the pesticide ice cream if you have it.
The ballot to enter Shenzhen
COVID-19
Due to the high demand of people trying to cross over from HK to Shenzhen through the Shenzhen Bay Control Point, the wait to take a COVID test in order to pass was about three hours at peak times. For anyone who could afford to, officials recommended that passengers not arrive at the control point until past 3 PM.
