🌊 Free Tide: HK on a roll at the Olympics

www.hightide.harbourtimes.com

Good morning

You’ve read the subtitle. Today, we have a local politician apologising for the tone he used in a complaint against badminton player Angus Ng’s clothing by making a Community post on YouTube.

Well I don’t have a YouTube channel but I, too, apologise for something in yesterday’s Tide—I wrote that the first person to be tried under the national security law received a life sentence when he was only convicted and facing life in prison. Many thanks to David Webb of webb-site.com for keeping us accountable!

If anything, this serves as proof that we need to hire a fact-checker ASAP. We’re doing our best here, but help HT function on something other than the work of mere unpaid interns by joining Paid Tide šŸ™

HK takes home silver in swimming

Surprise surprise, more Olympics news!

Silver medalist Siobhan Bernadette Haughey has won HK its first medal in an Olympics swimming event. This is also the first time the city has taken home more than one medal in the competition.

Haughey, half Irish and born and raised in HK, competed in the women’s 200m freestyle swimming final with a time of 1:53.92.

Coronavirus in Hong Kong

  • New cases:Ā 1 (imported)

  • Total cases:Ā 11,981 cases so far (62 active cases, 212Ā total deaths, 11,707 total recovered)

In other news…

  • Democratic Alliance member Nicholas Muk denounced Angus Ng for not having the bauhinia on his badminton attire and called on him to withdraw if he wasn’t willing to represent HK. Muk has now apologised to the Olympian—not for the criticism itself, but for the tone he used in delivering it.

  • The Hong Kong Alliance—the group behind HK's Tiananmen Square vigils—was fined HK$8,000 for running the June 4th museum in Mong Kok without a licence. They plead guilty to violating the Places of Public Entertainment Ordinance after having legal consultations.
