🌊 Free Tide: Delta variant spreads in China
Local broadcaster takes down all of its tweets
And… scene. I’ve been pretending to enjoy this gig for the past two months. Kidding. Thanks for letting me hang out here, I’ll see you when I see you. ☺️
RTHK clears its Twitter account
Broadcasting service RTHK has deleted all tweets from its English-language Twitter account posted before today. The outlet is also disabling replies for future tweets, explaining that they do not have the resources to respond to all comments and prevent the spread of misinformation.
Other Twitter users may still leave their thoughts on RTHK’s posts by quote-retweeting. In fact, it’s perhaps ironic that this announcement alone has received nearly 300 of them. As Hongkongers react in the quote replies, some mourn the lost tweets while others question if other state-affiliated media would follow suit.
Coronavirus in Hong Kong
New cases: 2 (imported)
Total cases: 11,997 cases so far (66 active cases, 212 total deaths, 11,719 total recovered)
China reached a six-month high of 71 domestic COVID-19 cases in one day due to the spread of the Delta variant. Wuhan recently reported its first local cases in over a year, and the city has decided to test all 11 million of its residents. Nanjing has also tested its 9.2 million citizens three times.
In other news…
Quarantine exemptions for all Mainland travellers except those from Guangdong will be suspended for the time being. This means that people who have stayed in Mainland areas other than Guangdong within 14 days before arriving in HK are subject to a mandatory two-week home quarantine.
To celebrate their 180th anniversary, Hongkong Post is issuing a set of commemorative stamps to be released on 25 August. The stamps intend to highlight the “development of the postal service, its evolution in the postal landscape for over a century and the efforts to provide customers with diversified services.”
