Lovely to see you again. It is almost Wednesday, my dudes, and I would’ve used that joke tomorrow but alas, it was not meant to be. We’ll see if the stars align soon enough.
Anyways, I’m sure you all greatly missed your weekly recipe recommendation- so today, here’s an especially decadent, savory one: traditional Korean jjajangmyeon (짜장멘). Recipe courtesy of Maangchi, literally one of the sweetest food YouTubers (is a ‘foodTuber’ a thing?) out there imo.
Also because I’m feeling generous, here’s another “food hack”: eat this while rewatching Parasite for the nth time (maybe stick to the first half, though). For those of you more suited to books, 1984 is also a pretty great reread. Orwell will surely brighten up your week.

How To Profit By Existing (within set boundaries)
It’s the time y’all have been waiting for: more money from the government!! There have been some notable updates in the scheme’s execution, so here’s what you need to know:
The second batch of consumption vouchers consists of HK$5,000 which will start being distributed from August 7th.
On Monday, finance chief Paul Chan announced that the scheme will be expanded to include people in HK who fulfill the criteria for permanent residency, while excluding those with extended absences.
No minimum period of stay is required for non-permanent residents to be eligible - but only the $5k from this batch will be available for them.
According to Chan, people planning to emigrate or who were absent from HK “without specific reasons” for 3 consecutive years would not be eligible for the vouchers.
You can opt for a different method to claim your Money© than the one you used for the first collection phase in April by registering online from June 23 - July 23. Those who are newly collecting this batch can also register online.
Those using their Octopus 🐙 for collection will receive $2000 on Aug 7 and another $2k on Oct 1, with the remaining $1000 being handed between December - April.
Those using the other collection methods will receive $2k Aug 1, $3k Oct 1.

Everyone’s favorite subject
Hong Kong was not and has never been a British colony, according to the new textbooks on the liberal ltudies subject in secondary schools. This is because “the Chinese government does not recognize the unequal treaties that ceded the city to Britain”, according to SCMP. Instead, the prevailing idea is that China has always had soverignty over HK and that Britain’s rule was not anything more than “an occupation”.
These textbooks further portray the period of protests and civil unrest in 2019 from the government’s (or, as some teachers say, the Chinese) perspective, focusing on the threat to national security. It is very much similar to the reformed curriculum for Liberal Studies, which focuses on identity, lawfulness and patriotism, among other themes.
CY Leung’s wife’s NGO sued over outstanding payments
‘Food for Good’ is the name of Regina Leung’s NGO, which was sued for outstanding payments totaling about HKD$370,000.
The former solicitor’s organization allegedly hired ‘I Architects Limited’ for work at one of its locations. This design company sought compensation through 3 cases for 3 projects, which originally had a total outstanding value of the ~$370k.
However, due to the upper limit of $75,000 for monetary claims filed through the Small Cases Tribunal, the total sought compensation is around $217,000.
Regina Leung was also sued last week on a separate occasion by American Express for a credit card debt surpassing $93k. Leung said she’d already paid the fees and didn’t understand why AmEx had taken legal action.

Ulysses 100 celebrations
To celebrate Bloomsday and the 100th anniversary of the publication of James Joyce’s masterpiece, Ulysses, the Irish Consulate General are hosting a series of events in the coming weeks.
For the uninitiated, Bloomsday is the yearly celebration of James Joyce’s magnum opus ‘Ulysses’. The date 16 June, is the same as the setting of the book.
Bloomsday Breakfast (16 June)
The yearly Bloomsbury Breakfast will be held on Thursday at Delaney’s Wanchai starting 8am just as the book does. The event featuring readings of the book and full Irish breakfast is free to the public, but advance registration is required.
Bloomsday Gala Dinner
Teaming up with the FCC, this year’s Gala Dinner has a whiskey tasting booth, a four course Irish inspired menu and a showing of a new one hour documentary “100 Years of Ulysses”, all for the price of $570.
The documentary will also be shown again the following day (17 June) at the Asia Society.
