Political publisher, ex-teacher and 'took an bullet in the eye' Raymond Yeung gets 9 months
Good morning,
Iâm officially coming back to HK! With the announcement of the 3+4 scheme, I thought it time to actually book my trip back. Flights prices went up 2x, but at least quarantine is shortenedâŚstill costing me about $10,000 for what would otherwise normally be a $4000 trip butâŚ..
But I get a seaview room for 72 hours?
Thatâs nice right?

Raymond Yeung gets 9 months
Ex-liberal studies teacher, political publisher and protest casualty Raymond Yeung has been sentenced to 9 months in prison by Judge Ada Yim. Yeung is convicted of two counts of âtaking part in an unauthorized assemblyâ.
In 2019, Yeung became known as âthe teacher who was shot in the eyeâ after he was struck by a police projectile and landed in hospital. Police arrested him in hospital for rioting but released him unconditionally. He was rearrested in April 2022 under unauthorized assembly charges.
Yeung pleaded guilty in first instance, something that Yim took into consideration when handing out his sentence. However, she did not consider Yeungâs permanent injury to his right eye (it looks fine now in pictures, but it basically doesnât work) saying that the police had given plenty of warning. She also mentioned that Yeung had stayed longer than he should have, even when things got messy, which meant he could not be there for a âpeaceful assembleâ. He also moved bannisters around the protest site, signalling that he was supporting a violent protest, said Yim.
Hillway [political] publishing
Yeung lost his job after a picture of his injuries went viral. He decided to leave his post early and focus on his side-gig: a bookstore and independent publishing company, Hillway Culture.
Since then Hillway has become known as one of the few local companies still daring to publish potentially seditious material.
Last month, Hillway organized the âHong Kongers Book Fairâ which was set to include books that the main book fair would not stock. However, it was cancelled last minute after the landlord cited a âlease violationâ for allowing other booksellers to sublet the sapce. In response Yeung said that the landlord had always been award he was using it for a book fair, and that he was happy to have all the books checked for potentially illegal material.
Stil didnât go ahead tho.

Toddler in hospital
Authorities repeated their calls for toddlers to get vaccinated after a two year old was sent into hospital for serious respitory symptoms after catching COVID. The boy developed croup and quickly deteriorated. Hospitals have recorded croup among younger patients on the rise.
Masking germs
The Consumer Council reported yesterday that at least 30 patterned face masks sold in Hong Kong have bacteria on the surface that exceed EU standards. However, one masks from CASETiFY exceeded the standard six times.
Go big or go home, even if itâs having germs on the thing thatâs supposed to stop germs.
Chris Tang secrets
Security Chief Chris Tang said in a Commercial Radio program yesterday that âcriticising the government is fineâ [but] âto provoke hatred among others, causing people of different classes to point their fingers at each other, attack each other or even use violence, you might have breached the lawâ.
His comments come after the arrest of two civil servants for publishing âseditiousâ speech on social media - they were admins of the âCivil Servants Secretsâ Facebook group where people anonymously commented on government matters.
Tang added that criticisms have to be made in faith for the government to âdo betterâ.
