Good morning,

Happy Tuesday! Quick reminder/shoutout that we’re planning on changing the URL for High Tide to be more consistent with HT’s overall branding consolidation (which probably went unnoticed because we work at the speed of very slow snails).

Have your say in true democracy by voting between four choices that myself and Jasmine, as the owners of HT, have already picked out.

Politics and Protest: Double Bill

  • Allan Au arrested for sedition

Veteran journalist and journalism professor Allan Au was arrested yesterday on allegedly conspiring to publish seditious materials. Local Chinese media reports his case is related to the shutting down of Stand News last year.

Two others related to Stand News: Editor-In-Chief Chung Pui-kuen and former acting chief editor Patrick Lam have both been in custody since December.

Au previously worked in senior positions at TVB and RTHK; he also wrote columns for Stand News and Ming Pao. Au is also currently a professional consultant at CUHK specialising in media censorship and self-censorship.

  • Yeung Sum Let Out

Former Democratic Party Chairman Yeung Sum left high security Stanley Prison yesterday after serving a 14-month sentence for taking part in a protest on National Day in 2019.

He gave a short speech outside the prison urging Hong Kongers to continue ‘hold fast’ and ‘speak the truth’ despiting “Hong Kong [becoming] an authoritarian society, in which the government stresses social stability, obedience, loyalty and hard-line governance”.

Coronavirus in Hong Kong

  • New cases: 1,407 (13 imported)

  • Total cases: 1,191,590

  • New deaths: 57 (5 backlog)

  • Total deaths: 8,827

More COVID news

  • 47,000 illegally imported COVID pills seized

Customs is on a roll cracking down on illegal drugs. Except this time, the illegal drugs are COVID pills. No indication has been made that the drugs aren’t usable - but they are controlled substances.

  • Online platform for private doctors to order free COVID oral medicine

The government announced on 2 Apr that private doctors would be allowed to order COVID medicine for free. This has come into fruition but I can’t give you the link because it’s top secret - only given to those already registered under the eHRSS (Electronic Health Record Sharing System).

A maximum of 10 standard courses is allowed per order, and delivery, as much as possible, will be provided on the next day. Doctors who use this system cannot charge their patients.

  • Students to take daily covid tests when schools reopen

Schools will be allowed to re-open for in person classes, but students and staff will all have to take daily COVID tests. Only those who test negative will be allowed to enter school. Tests will be partially given by the government who is donating 10 million for free.

Unvaccinated students will still be allowed to go school but will be barred from extra curricular activities “for their own safety”.

Carrie Lam ensures that schools will not be shut down over a single case, but only if 5% of students in a single day, or 10% of a single class get reported positive.

Lockdown and testing:

  • Tin Shui Wai and Kwai Chung blocks in lockdown:
You think Shanghai’s the only place in lockdown? Think again - we’re still at it.

  • Testing required for people who were present at 30 specified places.

John ‘No Manifesto’ Lee for CE

Tam Yiu-Chung, John Lee’s campaign manager said yesterday that there’s not much time to create Lee’s manifesto, but that it shouldn’t matter anyway because we can still support the candidate if we believe in his heart, spirit and vision (like an anime protagonist or something).

“Yes, the time may be tight when compared with the past. But I believe people will look at the broader direction and look at the candidate's past works and see if they agree with his targets, direction and vision and whether they trust him. If people think he's the right candidate and is capable of leading us, they can still give their views later on”

Or putting it in a more professional way, Tam said that John Lee needs to take his time to craft the manifesto as it will be very detailed in how various social issues will be fixed.

“Actually this approach is to meet people’s expectations. What do the people expect? They expect the government to help them solve the problems they are facing as quickly as possible”
